This façade is very often the support of an elaborate “decorative program”, formed by the interrelation between pictorial representations and hieroglyphic inscriptions, displayed in an architecturally and environmentally specific context. The purpose of the present book is to analyze the communicational function of such a program when it is presented on a façade, both through the intention of the designer and through its reception by an “ideal beholder”, using Memphite tombs of the Old Kingdom, from the 4th to the 8th dynasties. Based on a corpus of 137 private tomb façades, this monograph identifies the main chronological evolution trends of this particular space and its inscriptions (text and image) throughout the Old Kingdom. Then, the façade is contextualized within its built and natural landscape environment, in order to highlight the layout and display of its iconographic, textual and architectural rhetorical strategies. Private tombs façades are analyzed from the point of view of the designer (as displaying the social and individual identity of the deceased), and from their reception by hypothetical beholders (as an area aesthetically designed in order to attract people to the tomb chapel and entice them to act).

Les chapelles des tombes privées memphites de l’Ancien Empire, surtout connues pour leur majestueux décor intérieur gravé et peint, présentaient également des inscriptions et représentations en façade, tout particulièrement à partir de la V e dynastie.
